Personal Health - Financial Health Moving to Business Wellness

Starting a fitness program is like financial and business planning. First, you find a facility you like. You start with the assessment of where you are, define your goals and decide on what areas need focus. Next comes the training, and through the personal pain, initial results make you feel great and that you are heading in the right direction.

You can see the people in the class who have stayed on the program for a while. They look great and they're not huffing and puffing as much as you are. Then those initial sessions you bought on the Groupon site ran out and you just can't get yourself to write the check for those regularly priced sessions. You enjoy working with a trainer, staying committed for a month and then convincing yourself you can maintain your program at home. That's what the infomercials say, isn't it?

Managing business finances are no different. What makes some clients say they can't afford to do a budget and others say they can't afford not to do it? Why is it that some people find themselves in the gym every morning at 6am and never miss their work out?

So, I ask you, "how's that personal at home fitness program working for you? Are you doing the same thing with your business finances?"

Business wellness happens when things are in balance. Financial aspects of the business in balance create growing sales, consistent profitability, and growing equity. If you understand how things can work, then adjustments can be made and the business can move forward. Set goals and manage six key numbers. As this occurs, profitability will be managed. Isn't that where we should be headed?

People create a budget, not because they love doing it, but because it provides clarity and direction. It allows you to paint a picture of the of the end results you want. You define your objectives and commit them to paper. You share it with your staff so they buy in. If trainers take the time to listen to you and learn what your fitness goals are, they are able to tailor a program that allows you to grow and learn. Goals are met and a process is learned. Sounds like a budget to me.

Trainers take into account physical limitations you have that may affect your ability to reach some goals immediately. Be mindful of potential conflicts. Are you trying to do something that doesn't feel comfortable? If you want a great work environment are you be willing to be the ultimate team player? If you want to provide phenomenal guest service, do you exemplify amazing hospitality with an engaging personality? Your staff will do what is expected if you teach what you expect. As business owners, we must be the working role model of the behaviors and performance that we want. How you treat your staff will be reflected in how they treat your clientele.

Profitability, work environment, hospitality, relationships with your clientele, and business wellness can all be clearly defined. What do you want it to look like? With a clear picture, a roadmap and the appropriate encouragement, you can get there. 2011 is here. Where are you headed?

Happy New Year to all! As always, if you want to talk, we're available. The first call is always free.
